Katy Harris has qualified for the LPGA Tour

Harris finished 39th at the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament last week;  earned her 20 tournament exemptions for the 2012 season; also plans to play some Symetra Tour events (formerly LPGA Futures Tour) .

Local pro Katy Harris, who played in this year’s U.S. Women’s Open after taking nearly a decade off from competitive golf, has qualified for the LPGA Tour.

Harris, who plays out of Redstone Golf Club finished 39th at the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament last week. Her 1-under-par performance at Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, Fla., earned her 20 tournament exemptions for the 2012 season. The top 40 players receive varying degrees of exemptions.

The former Louisiana State University American said she was hoping for better status but was pleased with how she played and excited about taking the next career step. She plans to try Monday to qualify for events in which she doesn’t get an exemption.

“And my status can be improved through good play in LPGA events throughout the year,” said the 32-year-old mother of two.

Harris, who works with teacher Justin Hill of Little Rock, said she went into tour school confident.
